Christmas is almost upon us..

Christmas is almost upon us, so not many gigs going on this week. However, there is a handful of gigs worth mentioning. In the run up to Christmas, Y llangollen in Bethesda hosts Y Bandana and Tom ap Dan on Thursday. And if you don’t fancy spending Boxing Day night in the house eating your weight in leftovers, head to The Victoria Hotel in Menai Bridge for some live music with The Jukes and Banda Bacana. Tickets cost £8.

After days of laying around the house full of food and watching TV, you should definitely try and head to The Heights in Llanberis for their aptly named Cold Turkey Unplucked on the 27th, featuring artists such as Roger Hughes, Rob Jones, Liam Rickard, Eve Goodman and myself. And if you’re planning your New Year’s celebrations in advance, I’m playing at Y Penbont in Llanrug and Banda Bacana are at Caban Brynrefail. Advance tickets available.

Over the last 12 months, there have been some real high points in local music, some of which I’ve had the pleasure if being involved with. Dathlu’r blynyddoedd back in April was a concert held in the Galeri to celebrate 180 years of the Caernarfon and Denbigh. The summer saw so many festivals, from Gwyl y Felin to Gwyl Gardd Goll to Chwilgig. This year saw the first Glass Butter Beach festival in Abersoch, where local bands got to share the stage with national acts.

Local venues continued to put on regular music nights, from Friday Night bands at the Anglesey in Caernarfon to the Cabaret nights in the Greek Taverna in Bangor. Local promoters such as Lhotse Sounds, Roger Hughes, (www.snogonline.co.uk) The Ebenezer Chapter and Pethe Coll continued to organise events. The efforts of locals and musicians alike pulled together at gigs in aid of the Riley Fund, as well as Bangor Aid festival and charity single. Sadly Y Fricsan in Cwm-y-Glo, the best live music venue in the area, closed down, but thanks to the people at the Heights, quality live music continues.

So, even in these harsh economic times, all this proves that music is still a vital part of community life. So help keep music live and support your local musicians and venues in 2012. Next week I’ll be looking at what to look out for next year. Until then, have a very merry Christmas.
