Pesda Roc to commemorate Les / Pesda Roc er cof am Les

A special Pesda Roc festival is to be held at various venues in Bethesda on 1-4 September as a tribute to Les Morrison, the producer, sound engineer and musician who died after a long illness earlier this year. Gruff Rhys, who came to prominence as the Super Furry Animals’ lead singer and songwriter, will feature in the opening concert at Neuadd Ogwen on Thursday September 1st.

Les was a talented bass player and guitarist who played with a number of Bethesda bands in the 1980’s including M?g and was a songwriter for Maffia Mr Huws. His own band Offspring recorded an e.p. that was given airplay on the John Peel Show.

But Les’ greatest contribution was as a producer and his studio, Stiwdio Les on Bethesda High Street in the building that now houses Fitzpatrick’s café, was an important landmark in the Welsh language scene throughout the 1990’s. He recorded an array of bands there as well as producing many others at the Sain studios at Llandwrog and for Recordiau Fflach in Cardigan. The long list of artists for whom he produced albums includes Y Cyrff, Steve Eaves, Meic Stevens, Celt, Siân James, Iwcs a Doyle and Bryn Fôn, with whom he also collaborated as a songwriter and musician.

Les went on to spend many years working for the Super Furry Animals as a guitar and sound technician and toured extensively with them throughout Europe, America, Australia and Japan. On the day of his death Gruff Rhys wrote on his blog: “He was a tireless friend and mentor to countless musicians and producers not only in Bethesda and Wales, but with his exemplary social skills and unflinching spirit of adventure, he befriended and touched people’s hearts the world over. Thank you Les, we will never forget.”

Gruff, who released his third solo album, Hotel Shampoo earlier this year, will be performing with Y Niwl with whom he has recently toured. Y Niwl will also perform their own set and the concert will be opened by the Welsh country blues outfit from Penll?n, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog.

Tickets are £10 in advance and £12 on the door, and available from Fitzpatrick’s Bethesda, Shop Kathy Bethesda, Cob Records Bangor, Palas Print Caernarfon & www.sadwrn.com

Caiff g?yl Pesda Roc arbennig ei chynnal mewn gwahanol leoliadau ym Methesda ar 1-4 Medi fel teyrnged i Les Morrison, y cynhyrchydd, peiriannydd sain a cherddor a fu farw’n gynt eleni ar ôl gwaeledd hir. Bydd Gruff Rhys, canwr a sgwennwr y Super Furry Animals gynt, yn perfformio yng nghyngerdd gyntaf yr ?yl yn Neuadd Ogwen ar nos Iau 1 Medi.

Roedd Les yn fasydd a gitarydd talentog a chwaraeodd gydag amryw o fandiau Bethesda yn yr 1980au gan gynnwys M?g, ac roedd yn gyfansoddwr caneuon i Maffia Mr Huws. Cafodd e.p. gan y band y bu’n ei harwain, Offspring gryn sylw ar sioe radio John Peel.

Ond cyfraniad mwyaf Les oedd fel cynhyrchydd a thechnegydd sain, a bu Stiwdio Les – ar stryd fawr Bethesda yn yr adeilad lle saif caffi Fitzpatrick’s erbyn heddiw - yn un o ganolfannau pwysicaf y sin roc Gymraeg drwy gydol y 1990au. Recordiodd Les lu o artistiaid yno yn ogystal â chynhyrchu bandiau yn stiwdio Sain yn Llandwrog ac yn stiwdio Fflach yn Aberteifi. Ymysg eraill, cynhyrchodd Les albwms gan Y Cyrff, Steve Eaves, Meic Stevens, Celt, Siân James, Iwcs a Doyle a Bryn Fôn; fe gydweithiodd fel cyfansoddwr a cherddor gyda Bryn Fôn hefyd.

Aeth Les ymlaen i dreulio sawl blwyddyn gyda’r Super Furry Animals fel technegydd gitâr a sain a theithiodd yn helaeth efo nhw drwy Ewrop, America, Awstralia a Japan. Ddiwrnod ei farwolaeth ysgrifennodd Gruff Rhys amdano ar ei flog: “...yr arwr addfwyn ac anturiaethwr yma, a gefnogodd gerddorion ei fro i’r carn. Ymysg ei ddoniau; g?r, tad, taid, awdur caneuon, cynhyrchydd, cerddor, technegydd sain, cyfarwyddwr, plastrwr, elusennwr, cymwynaswr, rhwydweithiwr o fri, catalyst i newid, pen label recordio, rheolwr stiwdio, athro. Colled anferthol i’w deulu, ei gymuned ac i gymuned fyd-eang o gerddorion. Diolch Les. Bydd byth dy debyg ac fe gofiwn dy garedigrwydd a’th gyfeillgarwch am byth.”

Bydd Gruff, a ryddhaodd ei drydydd albwm unigol, Hotel Shampoo, yn gynt eleni, yn perfformio gyda’r Niwl yn dilyn taith lwyddiannus ddiweddar efo nhw. Bydd Y Niwl hefyd yn perfformio eu set eu hunain ac fe gaiff y gyngerdd ei hagor gan y gr?p blws gwlad o Benll?n, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog.

Mae’r tocynnau’n £10 ymlaen llaw ac yn £12 ar y drws, ar werth o Fitzpatrick’s Bethesda, Siop Kathy Bethesda, Recordiau’r Cob Bangor, Palas Print Caernarfon a www.sadwrn.com
