Sam Baker at the Vic 1.9.11

Annwyl ffrindiau

Here's some information on the Sam Baker gig next week and some other treats lined up over the coming couple of months. Sam is a unique and subtly powerful performer who made a huge impression when he appeared here two years ago and consequently tickets are already going very well for this one so get yours now ! Sam will this time be accompanied by pianist/accordionist Chip Dolan and this will be the first date on his current UK tour.

Speaking of highlights, I came across this youtube clip of Mud Morganfield at the Vic recently and thought I should share it with you  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KqXQW4lalU

Sam Baker

Until fairly recently, Texas songwriter Sam Baker was not that well known even in his adopted hometown of Austin, but a trilogy of albums begun in 2004 with "Mercy" followed in 2007 by "Pretty World" and completed in 2009 by "Cotton" have transformed Baker into a major underground artist who is hailed by Bob Harris as "magnificent". With his raspy, almost spoken word vocal style and his literate, poignant, and carefully observed songs that grapple with the beauties, complexities, and little tragedies of this world, Sam Baker has much in common with other Texan songwriters like Robert Earl Keen, Townes Van Zandt, and Guy Clark, although his approach to narrative probably comes closest to an artist like John Prine. Baker grew up in Itasca, Texas, a prairie town southwest of Dallas and Fort Worth. He was exposed to a wide array of music as a child (his mother was a local church organist), not the least of which was his father's collection of country blues artists. The defining moment in Baker's life came however in 1986 when he was travelling on a train to visit Machu Picchu in Peru. A terrorist bomb exploded on the train killing fellow passangers and gravely injuring Baker, who lost most of his hearing and suffered serious injuries to his left arm. He had 18 corrective surgeries performed on him over the next decade and the consequent physical, emotional, and spiritual journey Baker experienced helped him form his quiet and passionate view of the world. Baker had to completely relearn how to play the guitar with his mangled left hand, and singing was extremely difficult for him because of his severe hearing and memory loss, but he overcame these obstacles to develop his uniquely hushed and quietly powerful performance style based around his outstanding songs. On Thursday September 1st this remarkable and unique artist appears at the Victoria hotel in Menai Bridge. Tickets are on sale now at Cob Records in Bangor and Palas Print in Caernarfon.

November 1st - EILEN JEWELL - Victoria Hotel, Menai Bridge

Boston songstress Eilen Jewell's music has been compared to Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch and Peggy Lee. Certainly her fusion of rockabilly, 60′s twangy folk rock and vintage country swing draws those comparisons easily but in addition to Eilen’s satisfyingly bluesy vocals, it’s the timewarp guitars provided by Jerry Miller and an ace rhythm section that completes a classic sound.
