Trigonos land and food

It's an exciting time of year on the land - sometimes it is frozen, sometimes soaking wet, and rarely workable. This year the weather is mild and it's tempting to make a start on cultivation. Experience teaches caution and so our focus is on the crops in the polytunnels. Salad stuff is always needed and comes from sowings made last autumn. Early onions and carrots have been sown for that first fresh taste of something "real".

In the field we are cropping winter greens, with sprouting broccoli yet to come and, from storage, celeriac, potatoes and some embarassingly large beetroot which, fortunately, our visitors enjoy prepared as Borscht! (see recipe below)

Always we have the vision of a beautiful harvest, knowing full well the hindrances on the way. There's nothing quite as rewarding as seeing a field full of healthy vegetables or a tunnel with bright red tomatoes hanging in clusters, and knowing that together land and nature have provided so generously.

Let there be Sunshine

On December 7th The Trigonos photovoltaic array began operation. We have 16 panels generating 4kWh maximum on a good bright clear day. We are optimistic that this will be a frequent event. The cost, around £15,000, has been funded by a loan from Triodos Bank, with whom we have our mortgage. Triodos describes itself as providing "ethical banking for businesses and charities". They have supported Trigonos throughout its 15 year life and we have found them to be excellent partners. http://www.triodos.co.uk

The installation was carried out by Dulas ltd., the company that also installed our woodchip heating system four years ago.  http://www.dulas.org.uk   ....came rain and shine!

Yes, we had them both, as data from our weather station, set up in April 2011 shows. In the nine months to December 1163 mm of rain (46 inches) was recorded with December wettest at 195 mm (7â…” inches) and the 12th the wettest day with 32.8 mm (1â…“ inch).

The highest temperature was 24.8 C on the 3 June and the lowest of -1.7 C on the 6 November.

The strongest wind gust was 55 mph on the 24th October, while the highest mean wind speed as defined by the Met Office (blowing for 10 minutes) was on the 2nd May when an easterly down from Snowdon reached 29 mph.

Our sunshine recording only started in the middle of July. The sunniest day was 27th July when it shone for 12.3 hours.

  Emma and Peaches Emma Jones

Most of you who have visited Trigonos will have met Emma, one of our colleagues working in the kitchen and dining room. Emma died just before Christmas, as the result of an assault near her home. Her death is a tragic loss to her family and especially to her 11 year old son who, as a single parent, she brought up with tremendous devotion.

Emma had a permanent sense of fun and optimism about life. A tutor who regularly visits Trigonos expressed it well:

"Emma was my certain smile. On the silent meals she would catch my eye and wink. Together we would hope our smiles did not become giggles".

Another tutor said:

"Emma was the friendliest of souls - so kind to me when I was recently ill"

And so she was to everyone.

Emma loved riding and not long ago got the loan of a horse. One day she arrived at Trigonos on Peaches - with a big smile as ever. This is how we will remember her.

IRAN: TEN REASONS TO PROTEST AGAINST WAR AND SANCTIONS

12th February 2012

1. NO THREAT. Iran has not attacked any country in more than 200 years. Its military spending per capita is among the lowest in the region. The regime has allowed inspections and agreed to negotiate with the West on all issues. Current Western rhetoric recalls the Iraq war, when a threat was fabricated to justify an attack.

2. DOUBLE STANDARDS. Many of the West's allies, including Israel, have nuclear weapons. There is no evidence that Iran is developing them, as last year's IAEA report made clear. Iran, unlike Israel and Pakistan, is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, under which it…

ACTA: the New Threat to the net

30th January 2012

A new global treaty could allow corporations to police everything that we do on the Internet. Last week 3 million of us successfully pushed back the US censorship bills -- if we act now, we can get the EU Parliament to bury this new threat to all of us:

Last week, 3 million of us beat back America's attack on our Internet! -- but there is an even bigger threat out there, and our global movement for freedom online is perfectly poised to…

Toronto Subway Riders Come Face to Face with Farm Animals

28th January 2012

As part of the  2011 "Be Veg" Toronto subway ad campaign, 1,000 "Why love one but eat the other?" ads running on Toronto subways have been asking Canadians to "be veg" and riders are responding.

This provocative ad series launched by a grassroots group draws attention to the similarities between the animals we call "family" and the animals we call "dinner" and highlights the shocking cruelty faced by animals raised for food in Canada.

Oriel Dafydd Hardy -> Bocs (freelance arts jobs available)

23rd January 2012

It's now exactly a year since Oriel Dafydd Hardy closed its doors, but they've still been busy bees.

The core members of the Oriel Dafydd Hardy team, made up of young artists, exhibitors and helpers have reinvented themselves as a young co-operative called Bocs.  This year, with help from Dafydd Hardy's staff and other supporters, Bocs have been working towards setting up a new arts centre in Caernarfon that will provide gallery space, artists' studios, workshop space and arts reference centre.

They're still looking for funding to carry out refurbishment and other costs for equipment and materials, but the good news is that they can…

Blackout - Save the internet today

23rd January 2012

Today could be the day we save the free Internet.

The US Congress was poised to pass a law allowing officials to censor access to any website around the world. But after we delivered our 1.25 million strong petition to the White House, it came out against the bill and with public pressure at a boiling point even some bill backers are switching sides. Now, the Wikipedia - led blackout protest has rocketed the public campaign to the top of the news.

We are turning the tide. But the dark forces of censorship are trying to revive the bill right now. Let’s bury it for…

Twitter service launched for Snowdonia

30th December 2011

Snowdonia National Park is using Twitter to give people weather information and walking advice.

A new information service using Twitter has been launched aimed at keeping walkers safe in Snowdonia.

The national park is using the social media site to give people weather information and walking advice before they take to the mountains.

The service - @safesnowdonia in English and @eryridiogel in Welsh - will also highlight good mountaineering examples.

Llanberis Rescue Team said it regularly saved walkers who had failed to check the weather forecast.

"This new service will be a valuable service to everyone who intends…

We're Winning

20th December 2011

Avaaz is on fire, at 10.5 million people and rising fast. But we're also deepening our activism -- and with the combination of depth and huge numbers, we're winning, over and over again. Scroll down to see some great examples from the last several weeks.

We're not just effectively delivering petitions, we're running safe houses and smuggling routes to protect democratic movements, challenging corporations by bringing lawsuits or calling all their shareholders, donating millions to equip human rights defenders with the latest technology, and powerfully delivering the voices of our community direct and in person to presidents, billionaires, ambassadors and cabinet ministers.

It's working -- scroll down to…
